Denny Terrace shows off its new look

Seattle Housing Authority’s Denny Terrace is a highly visible, high rise apartment building perched directly over Interstate 5 on the corner of Denny Way and Melrose Avenue East. With such a prominent position, great care was put into the façade design transformation as part of its modernization.

The modernization of Denny Terrace was made possible with an American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) grant to reduce the energy and water consumption of the building. The DKA design team was successful in designing and implementing a plan that exceeded the 35% ARRA reduction goals with an overall savings of 37%.

The project’s modernization scope included maintenance upgrades, improving water conservation and energy saving improvements to the building’s exterior envelope and infrastructure with replacement of all windows and thermal insulation. Interior improvements included improving all common areas and 11 residential units for handicap accessibility.

Existing Buildings to BIM Buildings with Autodesk® ImageModeler™

Autodesk ImageModeler is a subscription-based application from Autodesk that allows you to create a 3D model from images of a building. In this class, we'll look at how images can be calibrated using points and measurements. Then we'll take the time to mass up a building from those points and import it into other applications for further use. If you do renovation work or need to model existing buildings for facilities management, this class is just what you're looking for.

BIM in Your Organization

Companies often make the mistake of embracing BIM as yet another technology and tool. BIM is a complete process solution that integrates within an organization structure. BIM is a business decision that pushes companies in the AEC industry out of their comfort zone to explore new ways of writing proposals, budgeting, staffing, and billing jobs in a revamped approach. The Seattle AIA+2030 Challenge

DKA Participates in AIA Seattle's 2030 Challenge

The following are excerpts from the Daily Journal of Commerce article,

"AIA Seattle's 2030 Challenge gaining national attention"

by Katie Zemtseff

"Nine months ago, AIA Seattle hired Cassandra Delaune to help introduce its AIA+2030 Professional Series nationwide.  The program, which is about to begin its third run in Seattle, is attracting interest from across the country.

The registration deadline is Feb. 15.  The 10-part series gives people design strategies and technical ideas about how to meet the 2030 Challenge.  The challenge was developed by Ed Mazria, and sets energy consumption targets, eventually leading to carbon-neutral buildings by 2030.

To meet today's target, participating buildings must be 60 percent more efficient than the regional average for that building type."

"Rico Quirindongo, principal with DKA Architecture, took the series in 2010.  He said it allowed him to understand the 2030 Challenge, and gave him information to start talking about it with clients and others in his firm.

DKA, he said, already uses many strategies outlined in the program.  The course will allow the firm to do what it already does better.

'We do a lot of what the challenge concerns itself with but people aren't acknowledging the fact that they're doing it,' he said."

DKA celebrates our new ATC status!

DKA began offering certified classes earlier this year and has since trained more than 30 people through a new service division.  The software allows contractors, architects, owners, subcontractors and others to build projects virtually in 3-D, saving money and time in the process.  Building virtually is the future of development, and was first embraced by general contractors.

According to a recent Forbes article on virtual construction, industry use of BIM tools went from 28 percent of firms to 48 percent between 2007 and 2009.  BIM is fueling growth in Autodesk's 3-D modeling business, which grew 10 percent last year, according to the article.  Architects have been slow to adopt the evolving technology, but it's a collaborative concept that's gaining steam.

As practicing architects and professionals, we provide a solutions based training approach to practitioners.  DKA's training takes clients beyond the "picks and clicks" of the software by providing a comprehensive curriculum.  Our goal is to provide training and knowledge using Revit Architecture in a production environment.

Get the greatest return on your software investment by building your knowledge at our Autodesk Authorized Training Center (ATC).  Many organizations provide training on Autodesk's software, but our recognition as an authorized training center assures you that we have met Autodesk's rigorous standards of excellence in education.

Navos Ground Breaking Celebration!

On Tuesday September 14, 2010 Navos celebrated the commencement of construction for their new three story / 45,000 sf mental health & wellness center in Burien, WA.  The celebration included a beam signing to commemorate contributions made by private individuals and foundations, as well as government agencies that included officials from the City of Burien, King County, Washington and the Federal governments.  Many of Navos’ board members were present for the celebration as well as the mayor of Burien (Joan McGilton) and representatives from the offices of Senator Patty Murray and Congressman Jim McDermott.  Attendees for the event also included members of the design and construction teams, DKA Architecture and Abbott Construction.

David Johnson, the CEO for Navos, was the keynote speaker at the event.  He highlighted not only the financial contributions made by the various individuals and agencies, but also contributions of time and talent.  Johnson also noted the services provided by Navos to those with mental health needs in the community and the recognition and achievements that Navos has made.

Site construction for underground utilities was performed in 2009 to prepare for building shell construction commencement in June 2010.  The building shell is currently topped out and will be enclosed with roofing, siding and windows by the end of November 2010.  Interior improvements for the first floor and sitework will also begin in November with an anticipated completion of April 2011 so that Navos can begin a phased move from their existing campus into the new facility.  Construction on the balance of the building will continue through 2011 with full occupancy anticipated by August 2012.
